What is pulmonology?

Your partners in respiratory wellness.

Pulmonology is a medical specialty that focuses on respiratory system disorders. Pulmonologists are responsible for diagnosing and managing a variety of respiratory issues, from common concerns like asthma, chronic bronchitis, pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to rarer or more complex conditions such as pulmonary fibrosis, tuberculosis, lung cancer and interstitial lung disease.

Learn about your lungs.

Through comprehensive examinations, pulmonologists aim to identify the causes of breathing difficulties, allowing for tailored treatment plans that address your unique needs. This approach not only enhances your quality of life, but also helps you be an active participant in managing your health.

Take charge of your lung health.

Learning about pulmonology is the first step to keeping your lungs functioning at their best. It helps you understand why preventive care, good lifestyle choices, and early intervention are important for lung function. By knowing potential risks—including smoking, environmental factors, and genetics—you’ll have the tools to achieve better respiratory health.

Why St. Luke’s Pulmonology?

Take charge of your lung health.

Our commitment to innovative technology and groundbreaking solutions sets us apart. In collaboration with medical institutions like Temple University, we offer cutting-edge programs and procedures for pulmonary conditions, including:

  • Pulmonary Fibrosis Center of Excellence. Designated by the prestigious Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, this program is one of fewer than 100 nationwide—and one of only five in PA.
  • Bronchoscopic Lung Volume Reduction (BLVR) procedure. Recognized as leaders in this treatment, we’re among the select few centers nationwide — and the first in the Lehigh Valley — to offer BLVR, a minimally invasive procedure that improves lung function.
  • Advanced Lung Cancer Detection.Using the Monarch robotic bronchoscope, a safe, precise and non-invasive device, our collaborative team of thoracic surgeons, pulmonologists and pathologists have helped diagnose cancer in its early-stages, which has led to earlier patient treatment and better survival rates.

As a result of programs like these, you’ll get comprehensive, high-quality pulmonary care close to home.
